Project: Urban Renewal Competition – JP II Park
Location: Santiago, Chile
Year: 2012
Architect: Carlos Peña

Situated at a pivotal urban intersection in Santiago, directly across from the historic Law School of the University of Chile, this urban renewal project envisions transforming a neglected public space into an open, accessible, and contemporary park designed for pedestrians and the community.

The proposal emphasizes the integration of local artisans, historically present in the area, through a semi-underground building featuring flexible programs and green roofs. This structure harmoniously blends tradition, urban life, and landscape, creating a continuous pedestrian topography that invites exploration, pause, and habitation.

As a symbolic and cultural gesture, sculptural elements are distributed throughout the park, offering an artistic interpretation of the public space and paying homage to urban creativity. The materiality, layout, and green voids are designed to provide the city with a place for contemplation, gathering, and recreation, reactivating a key node in the Recoleta district.

More than just a park, this intervention proposes a living platform for the city—a crossroads of art, community, and landscape.
